Position Summary
Zachry Engineering Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Designer III with strong piping layout experience, preferably within the power generation industry, to join our Charlotte Design Center. This role serves as an individual contributor responsible for plant layout development, design execution, and coordination across multidisciplinary project teams.
The Designer III plays a supporting role in ensuring constructible, code-compliant, and efficient plant layouts for large-scale power, energy, and industrial projects, while mentoring designers and supporting project delivery objectives.

Position Summary

This role serves as an individual contributor responsible for plant layout development, design execution, and coordination across multidisciplinary project teams.
The Designer III plays a supporting role in ensuring constructible, code-compliant, and efficient plant layouts for large-scale power, energy, and industrial projects, while mentoring designers and supporting project delivery objectives.
### Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Execute piping layout design activities, ensuring constructability, safety, maintainability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Develop, review, and approve piping plans, piping arrangements, sections, isometrics, and 3D models.
- Develop, review, and approve general arrangement drawings.
- Manage and complete all piping design deliverables, including layout drawings, construction drawings, material take-offs, and bills of materials.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to designers, checkers, and drafters, particularly with respect to piping layout best practices and power plant applications.
- Coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, electrical, and construction teams to resolve interface and layout challenges.
- Interface with clients, vendors, and construction personnel to ensure project requirements and layout expectations are clearly understood and incorporated.
- Review vendor and shop drawings for compliance with project requirements and piping layout intent.
- Maintain engineering document indexes and piping progress reports.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support project and departmental goals.
### Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree or High School Diploma with relevant drafting and design coursework.
- 10+ years of piping design and layout experience, preferably supporting power generation projects (combined cycle, simple cycle, thermal, or utility-scale facilities).
- Experience with AVEVA E3D or PDMS strongly preferred.
- Proven expertise in piping layout development for complex industrial facilities.
- Strong understanding of piping codes, standards, and industry best practices.
- Advanced CAD experience using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, MicroStation, or Revit, with willingness to adapt to additional platforms.
- Proficiency with Navisworks, and Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to lead and mentor design teams while producing high-quality, constructible layouts.
- Strong organization, communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced design environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate Degree in related field or Certificate in Design/Drafting.
- Direct experience with power plant piping layout, including turbine buildings, HRSGs, balance-of-plant systems, or utilities.
