Job Description
As an Electrical Engineering Designer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support capital and expense projects through the development of electrical designs, engineering deliverables, and construction support. Your goal will be to deliver safe, reliable, and fit-for-purpose electrical solutions by contributing to project estimates, equipment procurement, and commissioning activities. Your success will be demonstrated through the quality of your design outputs, effective construction and commissioning support, and support of operational excellence across Irving Oil’s refinery and terminal facilities.

Your Responsibilities:
- Use appropriate electrical discipline software, design standards, and work processes to develop engineering drawings and designs for scope related to capital and expense projects
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Electrical Team and Engineering Services department identifying opportunities to enhance safety, efficiency, and innovation
- Perform peer checking of electrical design deliverables including effort hours estimates, MTOs, design drawings, engineering work orders, procurement packages, etc.
- Assist with commissioning of engineering systems at industrial sites. Provide field support to construction contractors as required
- Perform field verifications as required for design work
- Engage with vendors, subject matter experts, and other engineering disciplines to effectively deliver safe, cost competitive solutions
- Engage with 3rd party consultants, contractors, and suppliers in an Owner’s Engineer capacity, which may include scoping, directing, reviewing and approving of outsource engineering work and deliverables, development of RFQs, review of bids, and responding to clarification requests and field changes
Your Skills:
- Safety as a core value mindset
- Familiar with drafting software (eg. AutoCAD and 3D modeling software)
- Able to develop and read various types of electrical drawings (eg. Single Line Diagrams, Area Classification Drawings, Electrical Schematics and Wiring Diagrams, Panel Schedules, Substation Layout Drawings, etc.)
- Strong communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain stakeholder relationships
- Strong attention to detail and excellent work ethic
- Ability to multitask and balance multiple priorities
- Proficient with MS Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Experience with Electric Heat Tracing design is considered an asset
- Able to work in the field: this includes working in year-round weather conditions, physical demands, and being able to lift up to 20lbs, while wearing full PPE as required by safety standards
Your Experience:
- Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent
- 8+ years’ electrical design experience in an industrial environment or similar
- NBSCETT eligibility is considered an asset
