## Your Opportunity At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us challenge the status quo and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s). Schwab Technology Services enables the future of how clients manage their money by delivering innovative and reliable technology solutions that support investing and financial planning at scale. The Apigee Gateway team within Enterprise Middleware plays a critical role in powering Schwab’s digital ecosystem. As a senior engineering leader on this team, you will help shape and advance Schwab’s strategic API platform, enabling secure, scalable, and resilient connectivity across applications, partners, and client experiences. This role offers the opportunity to influence how modern financial services are delivered by designing enterprise-grade API capabilities that support billions of transactions and empower development teams to innovate faster. You will contribute to the evolution of a modern API-first architecture while helping drive the adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices that improve developer productivity, operational excellence, and platform scalability. Through the design and implementation of reusable API gateway capabilities, security controls, onboarding automation, and cloud-native integration patterns, you will solve complex technical challenges that directly impact business outcomes and client experiences. Success in this role requires strong problem-solving skills, sound technical decision-making, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, architecture, security, infrastructure, and product teams. You will guide strategic migration efforts, support enterprise onboarding initiatives, improve observability and reliability, and help establish standards that enable secure and efficient API consumption throughout the organization. This is an opportunity to influence platform strategy, accelerate innovation, and contribute to the digital foundation of one of the leading financial services firms. ## What you have **Required Qualifications** - Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. - 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of platform capabilities and technical delivery. - 3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating API gateway platforms, including Google Apigee or comparable API management technologies. - Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and automation capabilities to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and software delivery outcomes. - Experience designing and implementing AI agents, automation workflows, or intelligent engineering solutions that streamline operational or development processes. - Strong programming experience with Java, .NET, or Python, including development of enterprise applications, backend services, microservices, and API integrations. - Hands-on experience with Google Apigee, including API proxy development, shared flows, policy configuration, target servers, and key-value maps. - Experience implementing API security controls including OAuth 2.0, mutual TLS (mTLS), API key validation, and certificate-based authentication. - Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and lifecycle management of API gateways and related services. - Strong understanding of networking and security concepts including TLS/SSL, certificate management, DNS, load balancing, and secure communication patterns. - Experience implementing observability and monitoring practices, including dashboard development, alerting, and performance analysis. - Experience applying test-driven development practices, including unit, integration, and contract testing. - Proven ability to partner with architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to design scalable, secure, and resilient technical solutions. - Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives, manage competing priorities, and drive outcomes with limited supervision. **Preferred Qualifications** - Experience contributing to AI-Driven Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) initiatives and integrating AI-enabled capabilities into software engineering processes. - Experience designing agentic workflows, intelligent orchestration patterns, or multi-agent solutions that automate complex engineering or operational tasks. - Experience supporting API management platforms within regulated industries such as financial services. - Experience with large-scale API traffic management, enterprise onboarding programs, and modernization initiatives. - Experience with content delivery network (CDN) or edge platform technologies such as Akamai. - Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Kubernetes, networking, and cloud security capabilities. - Experience developing architecture standards, reusable reference patterns, developer enablement tools, or platform automation frameworks. - Experience supporting highly available, enterprise-scale distributed systems. In addition to the salary range, this role is eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
