Job Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Level Designer based in Canada. We are seeking an experienced Level Designer to help create immersive, high-quality gameplay experiences for a cooperative horror exploration project. This role offers the opportunity to shape atmospheric environments, memorable encounters, and player-driven moments from concept through final polish. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including design, narrative, art, audio, and engineering to bring creative visions to life. The ideal candidate is passionate about crafting engaging spaces that balance exploration, tension, storytelling, and teamwork. You will own levels end-to-end, using iteration, feedback, and player-focused thinking to refine gameplay experiences. This is a chance to contribute to ambitious projects in a creative, remote-first environment where design excellence and collaboration are highly valued. ### Accountabilities: As a Level Designer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing engaging gameplay spaces that support exploration, cooperation, storytelling, and emotional impact. You will collaborate with various disciplines to ensure levels align with the overall creative direction while maintaining strong gameplay quality and player experience. - Collaborate with systems design, narrative, art, engineering, audio, and production teams to implement the creative vision and address design challenges throughout development. - Design and build levels from initial concept through implementation, iteration, testing, and final polish, including layouts, encounters, traversal, pacing, and player flow. - Create immersive environments that encourage exploration, teamwork, navigation, and discovery while delivering memorable horror-focused gameplay moments. - Work with narrative teams to integrate story elements, objectives, environmental storytelling, scripted sequences, and interactive moments into gameplay spaces. - Implement gameplay events, puzzles, encounters, progression systems, and environmental interactions that support both cooperative and individual player experiences. - Test, debug, and refine levels by identifying issues related to navigation, pacing, readability, progression, and overall player engagement. - Incorporate feedback from internal reviews and playtesting to improve level design, tension, immersion, and gameplay clarity. - Maintain a strong understanding of gameplay systems and their relationship with level design to create flexible, replayable, and impactful player experiences. ## Requirements: The ideal candidate is a skilled Level Designer with professional game development experience and a strong understanding of how environments influence player behavior, storytelling, and emotional engagement. You should be comfortable owning content independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team. - Minimum 5 years of experience in game development, with significant experience focused on level design for exploration, action, horror, or cooperative games. - Experience contributing to at least one shipped game title, ideally involving exploration, environmental storytelling, or cooperative gameplay. - Strong knowledge of level design principles, including player guidance, pacing, spatial storytelling, progression, and encounter design. - Experience working directly with level editors, scripting tools, and gameplay systems within a game engine environment. - Ability to independently manage assigned content, solve design challenges, and iterate effectively within production timelines. - Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with designers, artists, engineers, audio specialists, and narrative teams. - Passion for creating immersive gameplay experiences and understanding how different disciplines contribute to memorable player moments. ## Benefits: - Fully remote-first work environment with flexible working arrangements. - Opportunity to contribute to ambitious and creative game projects. - Collaborative culture focused on innovation, learning, and long-term career growth. - Chance to work with talented professionals across multiple disciplines. - Opportunities to expand your skills while contributing to high-quality player experiences. - Supportive environment that values creativity, ownership, and continuous improvement.
