Job Description
The Role
The Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) is seeking a Payroll Accountant – Analysis & Reporting to join our Accounting & Finance team. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing while supporting financial reporting, account reconciliations, payroll analytics, and compliance.
The Payroll Accountant serves as a key partner to Human Resources, Finance, and external vendors by maintaining payroll accuracy, resolving discrepancies, reconciling employee benefits and payroll-related accounts, and supporting month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. This position also contributes to financial analysis through labor cost reporting, variance analysis, budgeting support, and process improvement initiatives.
Success in this role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments to ensure accurate payroll operations and reliable financial reporting.

Additional hours required during month-end close, quarter-end, and year-end processing

What You'll Do
Process payroll accurately and on time while researching and resolving payroll discrepancies, including deductions and employee pay issues
Review payroll audits and exception reports, identify root causes, and recommend process improvements to reduce recurring issues
Reconcile employee benefit plans, including medical, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, and other benefit programs, ensuring accurate deductions, contributions, and tax treatment
Partner with internal teams and external vendors to investigate and resolve payroll and benefits variances
Maintain payroll tax records and support compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
Assist with quarterly payroll processing, tax reporting, filings, and issue resolution within Dayforce
Prepare payroll reports and reconciliations for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial close processes
Complete payroll-related balance sheet reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of reconciling items
Perform general ledger account research and analysis to resolve discrepancies and support accurate financial reporting
Prepare and support journal entries with appropriate documentation and compliance with accounting policies
Complete assigned balance sheet reconciliations, including payroll, accruals, prepaid expenses, clearing accounts, and other assigned accounts
Partner with department leaders to improve transaction accuracy and financial coding
Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, reconciliations, and account analysis
Prepare recurring labor cost reports, overtime analysis, department labor summaries, benefit reporting, and headcount reporting
Support annual budgeting and forecasting by providing payroll and benefit assumptions, staffing impacts, and variance explanations
Perform monthly variance analysis comparing actual results to budget, forecast, and prior periods, communicating key findings to Finance and operational leaders
Build and maintain Excel-based reporting models, dashboards, and templates that improve visibility into payroll and labor metrics
Assist with special projects, including payroll costing analyses, benefit plan changes, pay policy implementation, and process improvement initiatives
Serve as a Dayforce subject matter expert by supporting system testing, audits, configuration updates, and data integrity
Document payroll procedures and recommend internal controls that improve payroll accuracy and financial reporting
Collaborate effectively with Human Resources, Finance, operational leaders, and external vendors
Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance
Perform other duties as assigned
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of payroll processing experience
Experience with employee benefits reconciliations and payroll tax compliance
Strong understanding of payroll laws and federal, state, and local tax regulations
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and data analysis
Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting critical payroll and financial reporting deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with general ledger research, journal entries, and account reconciliations
Experience supporting financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
Experience using Dayforce or a similar HRIS/payroll system
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification
Experience with Power BI, Tableau, Power Query, or similar reporting tools
