As a Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII) and part of the Manufacturing USA® network, the ARM Institute team plays a critical, national role in driving the innovations needed to grow US manufacturing. Position Overview The ARM Institute is seeking a Robotics Software Engineer to support the development, integration, testing, and deployment of innovative robotics technologies that advance U.S. manufacturing. Reporting to the Robotics Engineering team, this role contributes to the design and implementation of software solutions that support robotics research, prototype development, and advanced manufacturing applications. Working closely with robotics engineers, researchers, manufacturers, and cross-functional project teams, the Robotics Software Engineer develops and maintains software applications, integrates robotic hardware and control systems, supports testing and validation activities, and contributes to projects that accelerate the adoption of advanced robotics technologies. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and developing innovative software solutions. This hybrid position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and requires collaboration with internal teams, consortium members, and external partners. Responsibilities - Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications that support robotics systems and advanced manufacturing technologies. - Develop software using Python, C++, and other established programming languages and development frameworks. - Integrate robotic hardware, sensors, cameras, actuators, controllers, and software systems to support research and prototype development. - Debug and troubleshoot software issues across simulation environments, Linux operating systems, and physical robotic platforms. - Support software testing, validation, verification, and deployment activities throughout the development lifecycle. - Create and maintain technical documentation, user guides, software documentation, and development standards. - Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, project meetings, and demonstrations while contributing to continuous software improvement. - Analyze software and system performance data to identify issues, optimize performance, and improve reliability. - Collaborate with robotics engineers, software developers, researchers, manufacturers, and external partners to deliver innovative robotics solutions. - Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen ARM Institute's software engineering capabilities and advance manufacturing innovation. Qualifications Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field. - Minimum of two years of experience developing software for robotics, automation, industrial systems, or related technical applications. - Proficiency in Python and C++ programming languages. - Experience developing software in Linux operating systems and using command-line development tools. - Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows. - Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and debugging skills. - Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams. - Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities. - U.S. citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline. - Experience integrating robotics hardware, sensors, cameras, actuators, or automation systems. - Experience with robotics simulation environments such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or similar platforms. - Familiarity with computer vision, machine learning, or AI-enabled robotics applications. - Experience contributing to open-source software projects. - Experience working in advanced manufacturing, robotics research, or prototype development environments.
