Senior ABAP Developer – S/4HANA Retail | Freelance Contract | 100% Remote We are supporting a leading international organisation within the retail and e-commerce sector with the appointment of an experienced Senior ABAP Developer for an initial 3-month freelance project. The consultant will join an established SAP development environment and support the design, development and optimisation of modern ABAP applications within an SAP S/4HANA Retail landscape. This is a hands-on development assignment requiring strong practical experience with modern ABAP technologies, particularly RAP, CDS Views and AMDP. Project Details • Position: Senior ABAP Developer • Contract: Freelance / Contract • Start Date: ASAP • Initial Duration: 3 months • Capacity: 100% / 5 days per week • Location: 100% Remote • Language: Business-level English Key Responsibilities • Design and develop ABAP applications within an SAP S/4HANA Retail environment. • Implement RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP) solutions and OData services. • Develop and optimise Core Data Services (CDS) Views across analytical, consumption and interface layers. • Develop and optimise performance-critical ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDP). • Review, maintain, refactor and improve the existing ABAP custom codebase. • Ensure development quality, maintainability and adherence to technical standards. • Produce technical documentation and solution designs for new features and enhancements. • Work closely with SAP functional teams to analyse requirements and translate business requirements into technical solutions. • Provide knowledge transfer, technical guidance and mentoring to internal development teams. • Support application performance analysis and optimisation where required. Required Experience • Minimum 5 years of professional ABAP development experience or equivalent demonstrable expertise. • Strong hands-on development experience with modern ABAP technologies. • Experience working on at least one production SAP S/4HANA implementation. • Hands-on experience implementing RAP-based OData services. • Strong experience developing CDS Views, including analytical, consumption and interface patterns. • Practical experience developing ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDP). • Good understanding of SAP MM and/or SD business processes. • Ability to review, refactor and optimise existing ABAP custom code. • Business-level English communication skills. Highly Desirable Experience • Previous experience working with SAP S/4HANA Retail environments or retail-specific SAP business scenarios. • SAP Fiori front-end integration experience, including SAPUI5 and Freestyle applications. • Git, GitLab or GitHub experience. • Unit testing and Test-Driven Development (TDD). • SQL optimisation and performance tuning. • Experience working within Agile delivery environments using Scrum and/or Kanban. Ideal Consultant Profile You are a senior, hands-on ABAP developer who can independently design and deliver modern SAP S/4HANA solutions rather than working exclusively with traditional ABAP development. You should be comfortable working with RAP, CDS Views and AMDP in production environments and collaborating directly with functional consultants, technical teams and business stakeholders. Retail experience would be advantageous, but is not essential where the required technical expertise and strong MM/SD process knowledge can be demonstrated.
