## Overview Nortal is a strategic digital transformation partner for leading companies and governments worldwide. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who shapes the technical direction of delivery, not just contributes to it. You will work in Java across complex, distributed systems, advise on architectural decisions, and be the person the team leans on when something is difficult. You will also be close to the client, presenting, advising, and building trust. Engineers at this level at Nortal are expected to evaluate AI tools for their team and build shared ways of working that make everyone around them more effective. ## Responsibilities - Identify technical solutions, analyse end-to-end flows in distributed systems, and provide design direction for other engineers - Implement new tools and frameworks, review code for defects and standards, and advise on new technologies and framework versions - Identify project and personnel conflicts and bring them to delivery leadership - Participate in mid-level technical leadership meetings with the client and contribute to bids and proposals at a technical level - Evaluate AI tools for the team, build shared AI configurations, and mentor others on effective AI use, assessing whether tools and data sources meet compliance requirements for the project's data classification ## Qualifications - Expert-level proficiency in Java, with meaningful experience in other languages and their major frameworks and libraries - Understanding of different programming methodologies (functional vs. object-oriented, imperative vs. declarative) and when to apply each - Optimised SQL schemas, familiarity with NoSQL trade-offs, and performance and integration test management - Proficient in CD and DevSecOps, able to introduce and set up practices, and comfortable running Agile processes for a team - Comfortable presenting project status and concerns directly to the client - Good communication skills in English (spoken and written) ### About Nortal For over 25 years, we've been shaping digital transformation, delivering complex solutions for global enterprises and public sector organisations.
