About the Role
We are seeking a Structural Designer / Substation Engineer with 3+ years of experience within the power utility industry supporting the planning, design, and development of Electric Substation Projects for utility clients. This position will be in Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, St. Louis, MO, Raleigh, NC, or Remote.
Under general to minimal supervision, this individual will provide Engineering support on electrical substation projects, producing designs and specifications for power and energy infrastructure. Tasks may include generating designs for substation structural and civil-related components, including foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, connections, and layouts. This role will support projects by designing and analyzing structural systems for substations up to 500kV, with structures that may include H-frames, bus supports, tubular steel, and structure foundations. These designs include calculations and collaboration with fabrication teams to optimize designs for manufacturability, reviewing shop drawings and resolving technical questions. Project coordination will be with other engineer disciplines, project managers, and operations leaders to keep projects on schedule, perform QA/QC checks, and when needed participate in client meetings as a trusted subject matter expert, playing a direct role in delivering complex infrastructure projects from concept to completion.
The candidate must have a strong educational background in design of steel structures, concrete structures, geotechnical engineering, and foundations. Experience reviewing substation structure design, rigid bus design, foundation design, oil spill containment design, retaining walls, masonry control shelters, and firewalls is required. This position will consist of completing design packages of the aforementioned civil/structural design components in support of the development of bid/construction packages for substation projects. Site-visits to client substation facilities are expected to be part of the work, along with occasional travel for client meetings and industry-related events.
Candidate must comply with quality control and safe work practices and maintain compliance with project scope, schedule and budget expectations. This position will be a member of a design team comprised of engineers, designers, and drafting technicians.
Key Responsibilities
Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, structural concepts, vendor drawings, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and written or verbal specifications to support substation structural drafting and design activities.
Review and verifying drawing accuracy, dimensions, material quantities, design revisions, change orders, and interpretation of contract plans and specifications, escalating technical issues as appropriate.
Work with cross-functional teams, including structural, electrical, and civil disciplines, in executing substation project work.
Assure plans adhere to applicable city, state, and federal regulations, as well as client and industry standards.
Prepare multiple phases of substation structural designs and plan packages.
Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned substation projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
Work collaboratively with other technical professionals on assigned project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to UtilliCo’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Support Engineering for substation projects, including foundations and structural steel detailing.
When needed - apply CAD skills.
Learn and follow client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure deliverables meet expectations.
Comply with UtilliCo’s standards, procedures, and processes.
Collaborate on design issues and seek guidance from other senior team members as needed.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent technical degree).
Prior experience supporting substation, utility, or industrial infrastructure projects.
Prior experience in structural or civil drafting related to foundations, steel, or equipment supports.
Experience with Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint & MATHCAD software, required
Experience with MathCAD, BlueBeam, RISA 3-D, FAD, SAG10, and LPILE software, required
Revit experience preferred.
Familiarity with AutoCAD and MicroStation required
Strong analytical and technical writing skills
Minimum of 3 years of relevant post education experience with prior substation structural or utility infrastructure Engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience supporting substation structural Engineering scope on utility or power infrastructure projects.
Familiar with engineering and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
Able to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by UtilliCo’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Knowledge of industry standard concrete, rebar, and structural steel detailing practices
Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes
Strong understanding of engineering principles and construction methods
Experience in leading structural drafting or related roles
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Able to produce Steel and Foundation Plans, Sections and Elevation Views
Experience with the Preparation of Bill of Materials, and Specifications
Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering documents
Good communication and teamwork skills
Knowledge of building codes and regulations
Authorization to work in the United States without the need for employer‑sponsored visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Experience with BlueBeam software
Familiarity with computer-aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
Capable of producing Steel and Foundation Plans, section and elevation views, assembling shop drawings, and preparing structural bills of materials.
Excellent research and evaluation skills with analytical mindset.
Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.
Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
