About IPSD Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary An opportunity has arisen for a Structural Simulation Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary Computer Aided Engineering team, responsible for supporting the design and mechanical development of internal combustion engines and other power systems for Caterpillar. You will apply your knowledge and experience of structural simulation to a variety of engaging assignments that support and enhance the performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability of Caterpillar products. You will also contribute to new or improved simulation processes to extend the efficiency and reach of simulation within Caterpillar. You will be helping to define our future products as well as supporting our current products. The scope of the Structural Simulation Team’s work includes core engine components and assemblies, engine-mounted components and assemblies and engine-machine integration. The majority of time will be spent building linear and non-linear finite element models for solution on a powerful HPC platform. The role will require close collaboration with design and development engineers, to understand the purpose and scope of the analysis. It is essential to interpret and communicate results effectively. Additional Info - Attendance at national, and occasionally international, conferences. - 5 days per week on site attendance mandatory What You Will Do - Identification, analysis, and resolution of engineering problems using engineering fundamentals. - Structural simulation of complex systems; including static, dynamic, thermal and fatigue analysis. - Execution of tasks following established internal procedures, while being competent and confident to deviate from such procedures where appropriate. - Clear verbal and written communication of results to internal and external customers. - Development and evolution of complex simulation processes to improve effectiveness and support future needs, working closely with partners throughout Caterpillar. What You Have Technical Excellence - Working Knowledge - Accredited bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering subject, plus academic or industrial experience in structural simulation. - In-depth understanding of the fundamentals of structural simulation using finite element analysis. - Sound engineering fundamentals. - Experience of internal combustion engines and rotating/other machinery. - In-depth experience of simulating complex structural systems. Analytical Thinking - Working Knowledge - Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Problem Solving - Extensive Experience - Ability to perform complex assignments. Effective Communications - Working Knowledge - Ability to communicate technical information effectively and to build effective relationships with team members and partners throughout Caterpillar. - Presentation skills using Microsoft powerpoint. - The ability to present to senior staff members and stakeholders. Computer-Aided Design & Information - Working Knowledge - Finite element pre and post processors, such as NX or Hypermesh - Finite element analysis solvers, such as Abaqus or Ansys - Fatigue analysis tools, such as nCode or FESafe - We assume that knowledge gained with one software package can be transferred to other packages performing similar functions. - Finite-element modelling. Process Management - Working Knowledge - Report writing.
