Job Description
UX Designer I
Do you want to help millions of researchers discover knowledge, at the very moment AI is reshaping what discovery means?
Are you an early-career designer eager to grow your craft on a product at the heart of global science?
About the team
Scopus is Elsevier’s trusted, source-neutral abstract and citation database. It’s one of the most widely used research tools in the world, with over 100 million records and more than 19.5 million author profiles. We are now building the next generation of Scopus: an AI-inclusive experience that brings AI-powered discovery directly into how researchers search and explore. You will join a small, collaborative UX team; two senior UX designers, a user researcher and a UX manager who you will be reporting to. Day to day you will partner with Product, Technology, Analytics, Marketing, Sales and Support, and connect with the wider design community at Elsevier, including the Design Systems group and the ScienceDirect design team. You will work as part of cross-functional squads, learning how research-driven design ships to production at scale, with seniors alongside you every step of the way.
About the role
This is an early-career role built for growth. As a UX Designer I, you will play a supporting role on small-to-medium design projects, working under the guidance of senior designers to define the interfaces and interactions of Scopus, including its new AI experiences. You will work primarily within our design system and patterns, occasionally proposing new ones, and you will help bring an understanding of user behaviours, needs and motivations into discussions within your squad, the UX team and the wider Scopus team. You will gain hands-on experience across the design process. From understanding user problems and producing wireframes, user flows and interaction designs, through to (AI-supported) prototyping and testing. As you grow, you will take on increasing ownership of design challenges and build the foundation for your next steps in design.
Key responsibilities
- Assist senior designers in developing product concepts and designs for Scopus following established design best practices.
- Use design and prototyping tools (Figma, Codex, VSCode, Claude/Claude design, pen and paper…) to deliver core UX artifacts such as wireframes, user flows and interaction designs.
- Work within our existing design system, patterns and style guides to keep experiences consistent across the product, occasionally introducing new patterns.
- Collaboratively analyse research findings and make research-driven recommendations to improve the overall user experience.
- Support the user researcher and senior designers in testing your work with users, and iterate your designs based on testing and data analysis, with the support of the team.
- Use data and analytics to help inform your design decisions.
- Partner with product managers and engineers in your squad to understand requirements and bring your designs into production.
- Propose solutions to new design challenges, look for opportunities to develop new ideas within your role, and grow your craft by engaging with the design community at Elsevier.
Skills & qualifications
- Around 1–3 years of experience in UX/UI or product design (internships and relevant project work count), with a portfolio showing UX, UI and ideally some user research.
- A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in UX, interaction, industrial design or a related field.
- Foundational skills in producing wireframes, user flows, interaction designs and high-fidelity prototypes using Figma and/or Live data prototyping tools.
- A basic understanding of how to use research, analytics and direct observation to understand user needs.
- The instinct to ask good questions when exploring a problem, and a willingness to iterate and test your solutions.
- Comfortable working within an existing design system and following design best practices.
- Clear communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with designers, product managers and engineers, and an openness to feedback.
- An eagerness to learn, including a genuine curiosity about how AI can support research and discovery for scientists, but also how AI can transform the way designers do their work.
- Experience delivering in an Agile environment is a plus.
Primary Location Base Pay Range: NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg) €44,500 - €74,300.
