Job Description
## Description
At Mike Morse Law Firm, our people operations team plays a critical role in supporting a fast-moving, high-performing, and tech-forward workplace. We are looking for a seasoned HR Generalist who brings strong payroll discipline, benefits administration experience, sound judgment, and the professional maturity to support sensitive employee matters with care and discretion. This is not an entry-level HR support role. The right person will be highly organized, systems-minded, comfortable working in a complex payroll environment, and confident partnering with employees. This role is ideal for an HR professional who enjoys owning important operational processes, solving problems thoughtfully, and using technology to make HR work smarter.
This position is based in Southfield, Michigan, with an opportunity for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of the introductory period.
Why This Role Wins
Top-tier HR professionals want work that is meaningful, challenging, and valued. At Mike Morse Law Firm, this role has the opportunity to make a visible impact on the employee experience while supporting core HR operations that keep the Firm thriving.
- You will own meaningful work. Payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee support are essential to our team member experience. This role is trusted with work that matters.
- You will work in a tech-forward environment. We believe HR should use systems, data, and technology to reduce friction, improve accuracy, and create a better employee experience.
- You will have access to leadership. This role works closely with the Chief People Officer and will have the opportunity to support thoughtful employee relations, process improvement, and HR decision-making.
- You will not be boxed into one lane. While payroll and benefits are the core responsibilities, this role will also flex into compliance, employee relations, HR operations, and occasional recruiting support when needed.
- You will be valued for judgment, maturity, and patience. The right person will bring not just technical HR skills, but the professionalism, discretion, and emotional intelligence needed to succeed in a people-centered environment.
What You’ll Do
- Own end-to-end payroll administration for a multi-state, multi-FEIN organization, including payroll processing, timekeeping review, payroll changes, reconciliations, employee questions, in coordination with HR leadership.
- Administer employee benefits and HRIS-related processes, including benefit enrollments, qualifying life events, employee benefit questions, vendor coordination, open enrollment support, and accurate maintenance of employee records.
- Support HR compliance and workplace administration by helping maintain compliant HR practices, employee documentation, personnel records, onboarding/offboarding processes, audits, policy administration, and employment-related reporting.
- Provide thoughtful employee relations support by serving as a professional and trusted HR resource, assisting with employee concerns, documentation, investigations, performance conversations, and manager support under the direction of the Chief People Officer.
- Use HR technology effectively to improve accuracy, reporting, employee experience, and workflow efficiency, including payroll, HRIS, benefits, and recruiting-related systems.
- Serve as an occasional recruiting backup when needed, including support with job postings, candidate communications, interview scheduling, onboarding coordination, and applicant tracking system updates.
What You Bring
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably in an HR Generalist, Payroll/HR Operations, or similar role with meaningful ownership of payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee support.
- Strong payroll administration experience, including hands-on responsibility for processing payroll in a multi-state environment. Experience with multi-FEIN payroll is strongly preferred.
- Experience with Paylocity is strongly preferred. Experience with UKG Ready or other payroll/HRIS platforms is somewhat valuable.
- Working knowledge of employment laws, payroll compliance, wage and hour principles, leaves of absence, employee documentation, and HR best practices.
- Professional maturity and discretion to handle sensitive employee relations matters, confidential information, and difficult conversations with patience, sound judgment, and emotional intelligence.
- Strong technical aptitude and comfort with HR systems, reporting, Excel, payroll platforms, benefits systems, ATS tools, and process improvement.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a disciplined approach to accuracy especially when handling payroll, employee data, deadlines, and compliance-sensitive work.
- A flexible, team-oriented mindset with the ability to shift priorities and occasionally support recruiting or broader HR needs when business needs require it.
Why Mike Morse Law Firm?
We are committed to building a workplace where employees feel supported, valued, and empowered to be their best. This role is an opportunity to join a top tier people operations team that values accuracy, judgment, technology, accountability, and continuous improvement.
If you are a seasoned HR professional who enjoys owning payroll and benefits, solving problems, supporting employees with care, and helping build a compliant and high-functioning workplace, we would love to hear from you.
